Some cities have a Christmas market you go to see. Lille is somewhere you come to spend a little time in Christmas itself. The chalets on Place Rihour are a lovely starting point, but we love everything around them just as much: Flemish fa\u00e7ades, the streets of the old town, glowing shop windows and the temptation to stay out a little longer, even when your nose starts complaining.<\/p>\n

Our December tradition, long before La Maison Fives<\/h2>\n

Before we lived in Lille, when we were based further away or abroad and came back to visit family, we had a small tradition: booking a hotel for one night in Lille during the festive season. We wanted time to wander in the evening and enjoy the city, rather than leave just as the lights began to take over.<\/p>\n

It is a memory we love, and an experience we now enjoy sharing with our guests. For us, December is one of the loveliest times to discover Lille. People come from across the region for the atmosphere, whether for a family outing, an evening with friends or a weekend together.<\/p>\n

A little Flemish Christmas village<\/h2>\n

Vieux-Lille\u2019s brick fa\u00e7ades, gables, narrow streets and squares make a wonderful setting for the festive season. It reminds us of Ghent, whose Flemish charm makes us think of a Christmas village even in summer. In Lille, the lights and decorations bring that feeling to life.<\/p>\n

Do more than walk straight from the metro to the market. Take in the Grand\u2019Place and the Vieille Bourse, then wander into the old town. Pick up a coffee or hot chocolate, stop at a window display and let the evening unfold. You do not need a packed itinerary to enjoy this part of Lille.<\/p>\n

Even the cold adds something<\/h2>\n

With a warm coat and a hot drink in your hands, the cold becomes part of the pleasure: a reason to step into a caf\u00e9, linger over dinner, then head outside again to see the lights. A few snowflakes would be lovely, of course, but Lille does not need snow to feel like Christmas.<\/p>\n

Our advice is to stay a night or two. An evening walk, dinner, the illuminated streets, then another stroll or an exhibition the next morning: the city feels different when you are not watching the clock for the journey home.<\/p>\n

The wooden chalets are returning to Place Rihour. The Lille Christmas Village<\/a> is scheduled for 18 November to 30 December 2026<\/strong>, subject to change. Here are the details for planning a visit to this year\u2019s market, rather than relying on last year\u2019s programme.<\/p>\n

Christmas chalets in the city centre<\/h2>\n

The organiser plans around 90 chalets, bringing together traders, craftspeople and producers. The announced selection includes decorations, gift ideas, things for the home and seasonal food to eat there or take away. You can come looking for something specific, or make a small detour while exploring the centre.<\/p>\n

Place Rihour is close to the Grand\u2019Place, Lille\u2019s main square, and the shopping streets. That leaves room to wander towards Vieux-Lille, the old town, without making the market the whole day\u2019s activity. Check the official website before travelling for exhibitors and entertainment: some older programmes still online do not apply to 2026.<\/p>\n
