La cathédrale fut édifiée au XIIe s. par Jean de Châtillon sur un îlot plus facile à défendre que la Cité d'Aleth, où se trouvait l'antique cathédrale Saint-Pierre.
L'édifice s'est considérablement métamorphosé depuis la dernière guerre : nouvelle flèche, ainsi qu'une rosace au fond du chœur, illuminée par un vitrail de Jean Le Moal.
Très beau mobilier conciliaire d'Arcabas.
Dans les chapelles du choeur, tombes de Jacques Cartier et de Duguay-Trouin.
