Fondée au XIème siècle par le vicomte Néel de Saint-Sauveur, l'abbaye fut édifiée à la fin du XIe siècle par les moines Bénédictins. Les bâtiments sont partiellement détruits durant la guerre de Cent Ans puis reconstruits en style flamboyant dans seconde moitié du XVe siècle. Suite à la Révolution de 1789, l'église est livrée à la pioche des démolisseurs. Elle aurait disparu aujourd'hui si Marie-Madeleine Postel n'avait choisi en 1832 de restaurer l'ensemble monastique pour y établir sa communauté, toujours active aujourd'hui.
