Christmas in Lille 2026: more than a market, a whole city to enjoy

Some cities have a Christmas market you go to see. Lille is somewhere you come to spend a little time in Christmas itself. The chalets on Place Rihour are a lovely starting point, but we love everything around them just as much: Flemish façades, the streets of the old town, glowing shop windows and the temptation to stay out a little longer, even when your nose starts complaining.

Our December tradition, long before La Maison Fives

Before we lived in Lille, when we were based further away or abroad and came back to visit family, we had a small tradition: booking a hotel for one night in Lille during the festive season. We wanted time to wander in the evening and enjoy the city, rather than leave just as the lights began to take over.

It is a memory we love, and an experience we now enjoy sharing with our guests. For us, December is one of the loveliest times to discover Lille. People come from across the region for the atmosphere, whether for a family outing, an evening with friends or a weekend together.

A little Flemish Christmas village

Vieux-Lille’s brick façades, gables, narrow streets and squares make a wonderful setting for the festive season. It reminds us of Ghent, whose Flemish charm makes us think of a Christmas village even in summer. In Lille, the lights and decorations bring that feeling to life.

Do more than walk straight from the metro to the market. Take in the Grand’Place and the Vieille Bourse, then wander into the old town. Pick up a coffee or hot chocolate, stop at a window display and let the evening unfold. You do not need a packed itinerary to enjoy this part of Lille.

Even the cold adds something

With a warm coat and a hot drink in your hands, the cold becomes part of the pleasure: a reason to step into a café, linger over dinner, then head outside again to see the lights. A few snowflakes would be lovely, of course, but Lille does not need snow to feel like Christmas.

Our advice is to stay a night or two. An evening walk, dinner, the illuminated streets, then another stroll or an exhibition the next morning: the city feels different when you are not watching the clock for the journey home.

The wooden chalets are returning to Place Rihour. The Lille Christmas Village is scheduled for 18 November to 30 December 2026, subject to change. Here are the details for planning a visit to this year’s market, rather than relying on last year’s programme.

Christmas chalets in the city centre

The organiser plans around 90 chalets, bringing together traders, craftspeople and producers. The announced selection includes decorations, gift ideas, things for the home and seasonal food to eat there or take away. You can come looking for something specific, or make a small detour while exploring the centre.

Place Rihour is close to the Grand’Place, Lille’s main square, and the shopping streets. That leaves room to wander towards Vieux-Lille, the old town, without making the market the whole day’s activity. Check the official website before travelling for exhibitors and entertainment: some older programmes still online do not apply to 2026.

Getting to Rihour from Fives Cail

From La Maison Fives, at 1 rue Denis du Péage, walk to Marbrerie metro station. Take metro line 1 towards CHU–Eurasanté and get off at Rihour; no change is needed. The market is on the square outside the station.

Open the route from the house on Google Maps and check services on your travel date. For accessibility requirements, ask the organiser to confirm access arrangements for the Village; we do not yet have verified details for 2026.

Something else to discover nearby

If you would like to include an exhibition during your stay, our article on Éclats du rire! at the Tripostal introduces another Lille event running towards the end of the year. There is room for both during a stay, without turning it into a race around the city.

Staying at La Maison Fives

La Maison Fives brings together five guest rooms in Lille’s Fives Cail district and a ceramics studio. The metro connects the neighbourhood with Rihour, with the house to return to after the market. There is also Vieux-Lille, the museums and the former industrial halls of Fives Cail to explore: Christmas can be the reason for coming without setting the agenda for the entire stay.

The Five-room Hotel
La Maison Fives offers 5 rooms and 150 m² dedicated to guests in the bustling district of Lille Fives Cail.

The Ceramics Studio & Shop

La Maison Fives is an online boutique and a ceramic workshop that you can visit in the dynamic district of Lille Fives Cail.
